Demonstration of gestural movements affecting digital and interacting with the acoustic environment in the piano.

Finding layers of overtones in the bass strings requires a certain amount of pressure from each mallet, thus letting the mallet be treated as another resonant object

This piece features the sounds of a rubber mallet being dragged across the smooth surfaces of the piano to create distinct notes.

Elksong, excerpt, inspired by the call of the elk, imitated by the sound of the mallet against the piano surface

Thankfully, Lost

This clip is from 'Thankfully, Lost' that I performed at the Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago at the Option Series. This piece drifts in and out of a meditative state, exploring the sounds of the Sledge 2.0 synth against piano and extended technique; the piece rises out of dark, pulsing drones to rich harmonies and wind effects, before dying down to nothing.

This part of the composition demonstrates the techniques and harmonies I use to express an expansive and dark sound. Using white noise against improvised 5ths and strings the sound gradually dissolves to expose the repeated melodic figure which is echoed on the strings. I used a repeated stacked 5ths shape against a low bass note or pluck to portray a large space which is filled by the synth. This leaves room for the stark and questioning melody.

This clip is from a piece that I composed called 'Washboard' that I performed at the Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago for the 'Option Series.'Within the clip I demonstrate how you can use cards to create a ratchet sound on the keys as well as pluck the strings.
